NADA….NATIONAL ACUPUNCTURE DETOXIFICATION ASSOCIATION

Debra is trained and certified as an Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist.

Acupuncture is the world’s oldest medical science.  Chinese medical science holds that there is an extensive and complex energy system that flows throughout the human body.  When this steam flows freely, the body is in balance and healthy.  Interruptions and blockages in this normally free-flowing energy stream cause stagnation, illness, dis-ease, and dis-comfort.  Simply stated, acupuncture is a technique that helps get the energy flowing freely and restore balance to the body.  In terms of modern medicine, acupuncture creates healing changes in the various function systems of the body.

NADA Protocol

Auricular acupuncture is based on the theory that there are points for the entire body mapped out on the ear’s surface.  NADA, an educational not-for-profit corporation developed a standardized ear-needling technique to enhance behavioral health and wellness: this protocol uses five points on each ear:

Sympathetic:  Relieves tension

Shen Men:Calming/Relaxation

Kidney:Willpower, releases toxins

Liver:Detoxify, relieves anger/frustration

Lung:Respiration, detoxify

These five points serve to balance the body’s energy and assist the body’s healing processes.  Together the combined effect of the five-point protocol is, as referred to in oriental medicine, a yin “tonification” (preventative), restoring the calm inner qualities akin to serenity.

In general, needling the Sympathetic and Shen Men points produces calming, relaxing and centering effects.  The other three points, kidney, liver and lung, correspond to yin organ systems in Oriental medicine.  The yin organs are seen as internal, nourishing, nurturing, restorative, and supportive.  They store the vitals substances such as energy and essence.  In modern Western Medicine, the kidney, liver and lungs (organs of elimination) are related to detoxification and cleansing.

These five points are used in Acudetox treatment and were chosen based upon the work of Dr. Michael Smith, medical director of Lincoln Hospital in New York and chairperson of NADA International.  During the 1970’s he found this protocol to be very useful in helping people with healing of addictions, PTSD, and stress.  Currently, he travels the world teaching this technique so that we can all heal from these issues.

NADA Clinics:

Clinics model the program developed by Acupuncture Without Borders that allow individuals to receive acupuncture in a comfortable, group setting.

Here what happens at a clinic session:

Make sure you have eaten within four hours of the treatment.  Once you arrive, you have a seat and complete a brief Consent to Treat form.  Debra will place 5 needles in each ear to help reduce stress and anxiety, uplift depressive feelings and relieve anxiety, support sleep, and provide a general sense of well-being.  These ear points include treatment for the whole body, so many things are being treated with these points.  All needles are pre-packaged, highly sterile and disposed of properly after use.

Why use NADA acupuncture to relieve stress and anxiety?

    • It’s very accessible.  The 5 needles are placed in each ear so recipients can receive treatment fully dressed while sitting in a comfortable chair.
    • It’s very flexible.  Treatments can be done anywhere, with various sized groups. One practitioner can treat 10 or more individuals in an hour.
    • It’s very simple.  Treatment can be provided “on demand” without lengthy intake or wait.  Those receiving treatment usually feel its immediate impact, others notice it’s accumulative effect after multiple sessions.
    • It’s very economical.  Treatments are done in groups to make it very cost effective.  Currently Debra charges $20.00 a session for individuals, $5.00 for first responders and treatments are free for Veterans.
    • It’s very effective.  After treatments, people report increased mental clarity, improved ability to cope, improved sleep, reductions of depression and anxiety, reduction of aches and pains, and reduction of intrusive recall.

Debra is currently a part of 2 clinics.  The first is located in Goshen at 313 3rd Street and occurs every Wednesday.  No need to make an appointment, simply show up if you are interested. The second clinic occurs in her home on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 6:00 PM.  To participate in this clinic, individuals must contact Debra to confirm attendance.

Debra is open to establishing additional clinics.  Please contact her if you are interested.
