Emotional self-regulation is a must in our society!

What is emotional self-regulation?  Why do we need it?  What happens when we don’t?

According to wikipedia here is the definition :Emotional selfregulation or regulation of emotion is the ability to respond to the ongoing demands of experience with the range of emotions in a manner that is socially tolerable and sufficiently flexible to permit spontaneous reactions as well as the ability to delay spontaneous reactions as needed.

Why do we need this?  To connect with others. When we get triggered,  we all do, if I blast you with my anger, frustration, lack of respect you most likely will go away, or blast me back.

This then escalates .  Our limbic brains are wired deeply to see this as something threatening to us.  Instantly we go into fight, defend, freeze, appease. Disconnection!

If we can’t just let these pass through us, they get stored in our hearts.  Buddhist refer to this as samscaras.

I know this for a fact, as that was my story.  The heart needs to be coherent for proper messages to be sent to the brain via the vagus nerve.  Self regulation via the heart serves to balance the nervous system so our bodies  can relax and function properly.

Be aware as you go through your day how people are expressing themselves. Watching the impact it has on others or on you.

Self regulation is a must in our society these days, so we can heal and not hurt each other.

Giving a presentation the other day to corporation, HR said “adults need this”!
